GODS OF SOLUI

TAU | GOD OF CREATION

A beast of unfathomable size and strength who birthed the world and the deities that would tend to it from different parts of his body. It is said that the first lions were birthed from pieces of his heart, which he broke in order to protect his creations from Niks. He supposedly rests deep beneath Solui trying to recuperate in time to face off against Niks in the Titan War, the final battle of the greater forces. Earthquakes are attributed to a disturbance in his sleep, either from a nightmare or a malicious entity.

ZOLA | GODDESS OF PREY

Zola is thought to be a small woman the colour of chestnuts with bright green eyes, though she is known to be able to take the form of most prey species, indistinguishable from them except for her brightly-coloured eyes. She has horrible scarring on her hindquarters from her endless flight from evils and her brother Kasim. Zola is one of the most benevolent deities of Solui with a love for mortals, bringing life and prey wherever she goes and sacrificing herself to draw away evils.

KASIM | GOD OF ANGER & PREDATION

Unlike his twin Zola, Kasim is a very instinctual being who acts on impulse rather than reason. He is thought to be a stocky lion dressed in deep brown hues, mottled with white, and amber eyes, though he usually takes the form of an orange-eyed hyena four times its average size. He is responsible for the knowledge to hunt and kill, having practised upon Zola. He is also thought to bring storms and stampedes.

AREN | GOD OF LEADERS & SECRETS

Aren is the leader of Tau's children. He is the first to have interacted with the mortal lions and made the overall decision to protect them, given that they were pieces of Tau's heart. Aren gave them knowledge and wisdom and formed the first pride, spending a good few years as its ruler. He took the form of a silver lion with one blue eye and one milky-white and scarred when he walked amongst the lions, and continues to watch over lionkind as a white eagle. Through his white eye he saw all that ever was, is and would be.

AMARE | GODDESS OF FORTUNE

The silent queen of fortune, Amare was born frail and without a tongue. Tau feared for her, and Aren foresaw her demise at the hands of a creature of Niks. Instead of killing her, however, the creature pitied the quiet girl and forged itself into a tongue for her. This caused part of Niks to bleed into her soul, but her pure heart infected Niks in kind. Now, she is a tempestuous goddess; reveling in both acts of kindness and chaos. When she speaks a name in favour, fortune will follow the lion, often against all odds, but there is no telling what will please her - war, or peace. She and Fayola are the only ones who are able to go against Aren's visions. Amare is seen as a golden lioness with silver eyes or a golden lizard, but most tend to focus on the two voices she is supposed to speak with.

FAYOLA | GODDESS OF TROUBLE & STRIFE

Fayola is a sweet-mannered thing, though very few besides Amare and Kasim would risk being around her for very long. Born from a claw torn from Tau by Niks, she was stained by its touch and brings misfortune to those around her. She hides away as Hartseer Rock, turning herself to stone to try and protect others from her curse. Bringing yellow flowers and feathers to Hartseer Rock is said to make her feel less isolated, discouraging her from rising and searching for company. Though she's rarely seen, it is thought she is a black lioness with yellow eyes or a hobbled crow.

KENDI | GOD OF LOVE

Kendi is a cream-coloured lion with blue-and-violet eyes and a mane full of thorns. He is one of the most lively of the deities and is shown in most myths playing with mortals or tending to his siblings, although he is known to rival Kasim in fury when a sibling is harmed. He is responsible for love, marriage and child birth, supposedly carving newborns from fragments of Tau's heart only he can touch.

IMANI | GODDESS OF GROWTH & PROGRESS

Imani was the last of Tau's children to be born, formed from Tau's final breath before he fell asleep. Despite being the youngest, she is ambitious and wise and often considered Aren's right-hand and advisor. She works tirelessly to create the necessary changes for life, such as the seasons and growing up. She is also responsible for change of hearts and innovation. Together with Zola she hastens Tau's recovery. Imani is a tawny woman with ice blue eyes and a tail that wisps away into nothing, though she sometimes appears as a pale snake with as twisted tail.

THE FIRST LIONS

Before there was anything there was Niks, the great Nothing that choked all that ever could be. Formless, shapeless, Niks remained unmoving and unchanged for eons until Tau willed himself into existence, pushing Niks back as he grew until he rivalled the size of the deep emptiness. They struggled together until Tau mustered all of his strength and roared, a great thunderous roar that sent Niks hurtling far far out of sight.

Tau had won his first battle to exist, but he was not yet satisfied. With Niks gone there was room for much more, but nothing else had yet been created. Tau set to work to fill the void that the Nothing had left. He stripped himself of half of his pelt and laid it down to create the earth, bunching it in places to make hills and valleys. His blood and sweat formed the rivers and lakes and seas, and from his eyes he made the sun and moon, which he hung in a sky made from his skull. Tau needed none of these things, as he would always be able to form a new body as long as his heart remained in tact.

The void was looking much better now that it was filled, but Tau sought more. He took his teeth and cast them across the land to become towering mountains, the largest of which sits in the centre of Solui. One tooth fell and became Zola, and another became Kasim, the first two to walk Solui. Wherever Zola walked grass and flowers burst to life beneath her paws, and where she slept large trees grew. Kasim followed after his sister, bringing with him his gift of fire and lightning, both of which sprung from his mane. When the twins played together they upturned dirt and scratched fur from each other, and all other animals were made from this.

Tau loved his children, but neither of them could ever agree on what to do. Zola always wanted to do something Kasim hated, and Kasim always wanted to do something Zola hated. Very quickly their joyful tussling turned to frustrated battles, and their blood soaked the land beneath them, creating the marshes. Finally Tau had had enough. From his bones he carved his third child, Aren, and sent him on his way; but he was thrown too hard, and cracked his eyes upon impact. His arrival shocked the twins so much that they broke apart to investigate. Aren was calm and wise and persuasive, and won over both of his older siblings with his soothing smile; whatever he decided to do, the twins happily agreed to follow.

Amare was born next, from one of Tau's whiskers. The whisker was too short and thin to make her strong like her siblings, and she fell to Solui weak and missing her tongue. Aren spoke solemnly of her imminent death, and Tau weeped for her, birthing Kendi. However the creature of Niks that was foretold to kill her found itself pitying the silent woman and instead became her tongue, helping her grow and gain strength.

For millennia Solui was a paradise, tended to by the six children and watched over by Tau. Unfortunately this was not to last. Aren rushed to Tau and warned him of Niks' return, and that the Nothing was spiteful and sought to swallow everything once again. Tau became nervous. In creating Solui and his children, he had sacrificed much of his power and wasn't sure if he would be able to fend Niks off, but he was determined. He took his place before the world he had created and waited, braced and ready, until finally he saw Niks approaching, speeding towards him in its shapeless shape. The sound of them clashing was that of the sky ripping apart.

The battle waged for a hundred years, with Tau gradually losing strength. In a final effort to cast the darkness away, Tau shattered his heart, and it burst into thousands and thousands of bright shards that shredded Niks into nothing more than a fraction of itself, barely the size of a beetle. Some shards fell to Solui, where they sprang to life as the first lions.

Exhausted from his fight and without all but the core of his heart, Tau withdrew beneath the lands of Solui to rest. With his last waking breath he formed Imani, who was to ensure the world and its new inhabitants endured while he slept and assist Zola in healing his heart.

Aren took over Tau's mantle as guardian of Solui and commander of his siblings, sharing with them a grave vision of the future. Niks will return even stronger than it once was, and Tau will rise from Solui to take part in the final battle that will end them both, referred to as the Titan War. They hope that by tending to Solui and watching over their father, they can hasten his revival and save him from demise.
